Yesterday saw the release of a new magazine called Hapa Mag. Founded by Alex Chester, the voice behind the Me So Hapa blog, the mission of this quarterly publication is to celebrate and capture the many existing identities, perspectives, stories, and experiences within the Hapa community.

Hapa, for those who don’t know, means “half” or “part” in Hawaiian. While the word has evolved in different ways over the centuries, nowadays, it’s often used to refer to people who are part Asian or Pacific Islander.

Having gone through the inaugural issue already, here are just a few highlights from it:

As a Hapa myself, it’s a joy to see such a publication in existence now. Already the Asian American experience alone is vast and complex. To be a mixed race Asian presents similar but also different experiences and challenges of its own. To have a magazine out there exploring in depth on this broad experience is something that, in my not so humble opinion, is long overdue.

This is only the beginning for Hapa Mag. I await to see what directions the team behind it makes on this journey.
